Got a question?
Why do roofs need to be cleaned?
It’s not uncommon to spot homes with roofs covered in an unsightly layer of moss and algae. In addition to appearing unpleasant to the eye, heavy growth on a roof can cause serious damage over time. The moisture drawn in by the moss can lead to frost expansion and cracking in the pointing and lifting of tiles. In some cases, the moss has even started to eat away at the surface of tiles. It's clear that this issue should not be taken lightly.
If you want to avoid any damage and keep your roof looking as good as new, it's important to act quickly to remove the moss and algae. Taking preventative steps now can help to save you from more costly repairs in the future.
There are a number of treatments and methods available for moss removal, so it's important to choose the right one for your needs. Taking advantage of expert advice can ensure that you make an informed decision about which treatment is best for your roof. By taking action now, you can protect your home and keep your roof looking great.
Why is moss bad for my roof?
Moss can be a detriment to any roof's structural stability. Its presence may not be attractive, but it also has the potential to cause serious damage from water absorption. The moss absorbs moisture from the environment and its roots latch onto roofs, leading to degradation. Additionally, this dampness can give way to bacteria and mould growth which can result in holes and leaks in the roof, leading to water damage of the timbers. This can be incredibly damaging to a home if left untreated. Therefore, it is important to act quickly to prevent serious damage. Clogged drains and guttering can also become an issue as moss detaches and falls into the gutters, resulting in a buildup of debris that causes drips and puts extra strain on the system.
How will you access my roof?
Working in the safest way possible is always our priority. Our team is experienced with a variety of working at height methods including ladders, harnesses, and scaffolding to clean roofs safely. Usually, we employ the traditional ladder method to access roofs; however this may depend on the height and accessibility of the property. Our technicians assess each property before deciding on the best means to secure access.
What is moss, algae and lichen?
- Mosses are small clumps of vegetation that lack flowers and tend to thrive in low-light or moist locations.
- Gloeocapsa magma is a bacterium that produces the unsightly black stains commonly seen on roofs. This organism survives by absorbing water and emitting oxygen, and the buildup of algae can prevent sunlight from evaporating it away. As such, this type of algae is one of the most frequent culprits behind roof discolouration.
- Lichen on roofs is a blend of algae and fungus.
How do you clean roofs?
Step 1
Your roof will be assessed for suitability. Some roofs are too far in to their life and cleaning will potentially just exacerbate existing issues and do little to extend the life of the roof. If you get the green light, we're good to go and will schedule your appointment attend to improve the look and life of your roof.
Step 2
On the day we use a DOFF pressure steam machine. This is the only machine of it's kind approved by English Heritage for it's highly effective, low impact cleaning ability. The machine issues a low flow, low pressure (low abrasion) jet of super heated steam (150°c) to clear and clean your roof of biomatter - moss, algae & lichen, as well as general dirt.
Step 3
After cleaning we apply a high strength biocide to act as a re-growth inhibitor for biomatter (moss, algae & lichen) to extend the life of the clean - this means depending on the surrounding environment the clean won't need to be redone for anything up to four years.
Step 4
Your gutters are completely cleared of any debris that will have fallen from the roof as part of the clean - at this stage we can also clean your drive, patio, stonework for a lower cost than standard (since we're already in attendance) to really improve the look and value of your home or business.
Why should I hire a professional roof cleaning company?
Hiring a professional roof cleaning company is the safest and most effective way to keep your roof looking its best. Professional companies use specialised tools, techniques, and cleaning solutions designed specifically for roofs which are not available to residential consumers. This ensures that your roof will be properly cleaned without damaging it. Additionally, professional firms have the experience and expertise to identify potential issues with your roof such as missing shingles, inadequate pitch or flashing, moss growth, gutters that need repair or cleaning, improper ventilation, and more. This can help you avoid costly repairs in the future by addressing these problems now.
